Angel Tree Going Up in mid-November

Once again, an Angel Tree will be set up in the library in mid-November. The tree will be hung with paper angels coded to needy children in Truro and on the Lower Cape. Sponsored by FOTL in conjunction with the Homeless Prevention Council, the paper angels specify needed items for a specific (anonymous) child. Gifts are collected at the library and delivered unwrapped to the Council following FOTL’s December meeting. Watch for the tree – in the past the angels have been “adopted” quickly!

Author Judy J. Dutra – “Nautical Twilight: The Story of a Cape Cod Fishing Family” Wed. Nov. 9, 6:30 p.m.
Truro’s own Judy Dutra will read from and discuss her recently published book. The true-life adventures of a Provincetown commercial fisherman are described from a unique perspective. The realities of owning a boat, the humor within the characters, and a lifestyle that is disappearing from our coastal communities are represented in this family fishing memoir as the author highlights the sacrifices made in the name of sustainability and answers the question: where have all the fishing boats gone?

Second Saturday Science Session with Lucy Gilmore, Sat. Nov. 12, 10:00 a.m. until noon.

Author Josh Delaney – “Pieces of Eight: Piracy, Witchcraft and the Great Spirit of Colonial Cape Cod” Wed. Nov. 16, 6:30 p.m.
Set in the rich landscape of Colonial Cape Cod, this is the tale of the people and events that surround the 18th-century wreck of the pirate ship Whydah. An impoverished wash-ashore named Sam Bellamy realizes that his only chance for prosperity is to turn to piracy. But his search for fortune will take him away from his sweetheart, Maria Hallett, whose moments of apparent clairvoyance make the townsfolk wonder if she is a witch. Meanwhile, John Julian, a native man, follows the trail of the last wolf on Cape Cod. He is propelled by the belief that it is a messenger from the spirit world that will help him save the land he loves from the encroaching English.
