School Traffic Zone

This year, the Citizens of Truro unanimously passed a Town Meeting Article to install a school traffic zone in front of the Truro Central School on Route 6. This was a good move for the safety of our kids who cross daily and our police officers who are in the middle of Rte 6 helping them across. Town Officials worked closely with state authorities to get back what we once lost so long ago. I applaud everyone’s hard work in this endeavor.

Truro is unique in that our only school is located on a state highway. It is also located on the only strip of road available that connects North Truro and Provincetown traffic to and from points south. There is no “back road,” As you are aware, the speed limit here is 45 MPH. However police have seen speeds much higher even during school hours. The playground and ball field are adjacent to Route 6, as is the second staff entrance.

SignAs you may have noticed, the signs have been installed, and the lights are being tested. I expect the project to be completed before Christmas.

I would like ask motorists to be mindful of our new school zone. I am aware that it is new, and it will take some getting used to. Please understand it only takes a few seconds to slow down to 20 MPH and then get back on your way. It’s worth it. Truro Police will be out in full force reminding everyone to slow down in the area during the school zone hours both morning and afternoon.

Please help the Truro Police keep safe and secure kids and families as they enter and exit the Truro Central School by obeying the school zone. When the light is flashing, the speed limit within the designated area is 20 MPH. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.

Traffic Safety Grant

The Truro Police received yet another grant this past month. We were awarded $2800.00 from the Commonwealth of Mass for traffic safety related activities. This money can be used to participate in the state wide click it or ticket program. I am pleased that in this economic climate the police department continues to be successful in grant making.
