Truro Archaeology.....A Hand's On Exhibition
The 2010 season for the Highland House Museum was most notable for the installation of the first phase of our "Truro Archaeology.....A Hand's On Exhibition." The exhibition team of Dr. Robin Robertson, Diane Messinger, Cathy Skowron, Tony Hodgin, Mark Dooley and Deborah Minsky labored long and hard during the off-season to plan, design and prepare this exhibition. Bill Golden, Henry Lum and David Spang were instrumental in installing it. Phase II is in the planning stages, with a target opening of June 2011.
Various museum events in conjunction with this significant new permanent exhibition included: The opening reception on June 19; A July 21st Wednesday Evening presentation by Dr. Robertson, "Native Americans in Truro"; and a series of mini-dig sessions in July and August to teach archaeological techniques to young visitors and help them learn about the Native American presence in Truro prior to the arrival of the Pilgrims.
One hundred and twenty three children participated in these "mini-digs" and practised the basics of proper archaeological skills as they "discovered" authentic artifacts. This program was repeated for Truro Treasures's Weekend and again on September 20, when the Highland House Museum hosted middle school students and teachers from Provincetown.
