Winter Caretaker Contacts Needed
As we prepare for winter, we continue to remind homeowners to make sure they have a local caretaker available. We seem to run into situations where folks don’t have a local contact. This makes it hard for the fire and police to secure properties if need be. If you're gone for the winter or a significant amount of time, get a caretaker and let us know who they are. Help us help you!
School Safety and Security
We continue to work with the school on school safety and security measures. Officer DeAngelo will schedule the D.A.R.E. program in the coming months. I am working on a state mandated bullying policy and program with Superintendant Brian Davis.
The school zone in front of the Truro Central School will become official very soon. We are speculating that the equipment will be installed after Thanksgiving, weather depending. We are working on a public education program to inform folks about the speed limit changes.
Department Grants
The department continues to apply for and receive grants for different projects and initiatives. We were awarded the following grants for FY 2011 to date:
911 Training Grant | $6,000 |
training for staff in dispatch related areas |
911 Support and Equipment | $12,456 |
infrastructure and equipment for dispatch related areas |
MEMA Citizens Corp | $1,500 |
support for our new CERT Team |
As you know, we haven’t stopped there. I will be applying for a reimbursement grant for bullet proof vests when the RFP is announced and any grant which matches the department mission for certain planned projects. We are still waiting to hear from the US Department of Homeland Security on the computer software grant application we filed with Eastham and Provincetown.
Community Emergency Response Team
Our new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is up and running and a wonderful graduation was held for our volunteers. As winter approaches, we may very well need to rely on these folks for support. This is the first team of its kind in Truro and we are excited to have them join us.
Dispatch Lighting Project
We are preparing for the redesign of our dispatch lighting project. As you know, we worked with the Energy Committee to investigate if we could improve lighting conditions for the 24 hour environment while saving energy. We received a grant, and now plans are underway for energy efficient task oriented lighting. Truro’s Energy Committee and the Cape Light Compact helped us pave the way for this much needed project. I look forward to working with the Energy Committee as we collaborate on more ideas to help us remain productive while saving energy.
Cruiser Idling
Speaking of energy, we are working on a new policy that would limit cruiser idling. As you may know, two of our newest cars have IdleRight™ technology which will prevent battery run-down when equipment is on but the engine is off.
Vacancies
Recently, the Board of Selectmen gave us permission to fill one of our three vacancies. I have asked the Board of Selectmen to recruit an interested volunteer from the community to participate in the recruitment process.
The department continues to work hard. We have dedicated professionals working day and night to ensure Truro’s safety. I am proud to be affiliated with such people as I know Truro is in very capable hands.
